new wave for tallinn
"New wave for Tallinn" is a student vision competition "epicentre of tallinn“ - TAB 2015 "self-driven city“. Competition area was Viru square in Tallinn.
It is not easy to find unique and best solution for this problem, but if it is, it would do everyone. I tried to think about nowadays squares and cities, what they lack of, what they need, where is their future. I don’t know it my vision is the right one, but I believe in what I have created.
My solution comes up with completely new point of view, why should we see square only as some paved place with statues, fountains, sometimes trees or plants. I have taken it from the other side, have made it friendly, enjoyable and soft. I wanted to create something that will be significant for Tallinn, will be the new icon. Not for its look, but for its purpose and hopefully, for starting new trend in the future.
I am nature lover and I hope it is what you not only see from this, but also feel. I want to bring back what has been long lost, cities in these days are in fifty shades of grey with almost no trees, few parks and almost no colours. I want to bring back the nature, confront everyone with it, show it to them, make them feel it under their feet, on their skin.
That is the reason why I created this, why it is completely new terrain in the middle of Tallinn. It is something new, but visions should be new and we can not be afraid of change if we want to improve the world around us.

COMPETITION AREA
The competition area is limited to the space between buildings around the Viru intersection, with the façades of the surrounding buildings serving as the border of the competition area. The surrounding area of the vision competition which the participants are also encouraged to consider and propose solutions for, is the street space between the buildings of the surrounding quarters.

All the traffic in this area will be situated underground so it will not reduce space on surface. Roads are based on these, which are there now only simplified so it would be easier to use for self-driven cars, trams and buses. Exits out of tunnels are just outside the main area.
Pick-up zones near hotels are sustained as well as bus/tram stations, which are only moved a few meters away from square near exits from underground. In the underground would also be situated garbage container. Rubbish would be deployed there via “black holes” in walls on the surface, similar to pneumatic tube post. |
Main passages are paved for preserving the barrier-free passing and also as a symbol of “organized civilisation”, but rest can walk where will their feet lead them, on meadows there are also no paths and I want to bring joy from walking on grass, bare feet because that is something not so usual for cities.
The paved area is also divided to rooms with benches, where people can group. Each bench is unique, in that way is every one of them kind of sculpture decorating space around. There is also main area, only part covered not only by the frame, but also by glass, co it is shielded against weather. This place should work as main part of all area, as the real square for meetings, concerts and so on. |
Most of the area is covered with new terrain, which is walkable. There is combination of two “materials”, green grassy surface (walkable) and blue metal web/frame (non walkable). Colours are significant for this place and city, blue is associated with sea, which is inseparable part of Tallinn, but green is also important colour and symbol, because Tallinn would like to be the European Green Capital for year 2018.
The reason why it is not looking as classic today’s square is, that I reckon people would want to have more nature around them and less concrete blocks so significant for our days. So the square looking like a meadow would brought more people to relax and enjoy their free time there instead of just walking through as fast as possible. |
Maybe the most high-tech gadget in whole area, whole frame structure would work as huge air purifier. Shell would work only as porous passage for air to go in the structure, where are placed filters with active algae cleaning air from pollution, carbon dioxide and dust.
This type of filter is used in some incineration plants and its biggest advantage is it do not have to be replaced, it is living organism replacing itself, therefore it is absolutely ecological. Trees will always be the best air purifier, but we can not have a forest in the middle of the city, so we should at least help them the best way we can. |
This is a system of energy harvesting panels for powering nearby electronics as sockets, which will slide out of the ground when they have power, street lights, signs and so on. It uses energy of each people's’ step to create electricity.
Laid down under each path, walkway or also roadway, it should significantly help with “green” electricity in Tallinn. Professor Steven Hawking said, that this technology has the potential to change the way we source power in the future. |
People are always with their electronics, but they can not charge them outside. Now they can. There will be sliding sockets, which will come out of the ground when they have enough power. Their mechanism would be similar to water sprinklers on football stadiums.

Colours are hard to find in nowadays cities, these benches bring some of basic colour, blue as water, green as nature and orange as sun, three world most important things, which allow us to live here.
These benches are also kind of art and Sculptures, because each of them is different. This is a way how to enliven area with colours and fun, which can be with benches shaped like this. |
